iPhone competitive testing
Project brief
We were asked to conduct a comparison between the Apple iPhone and a prototype interface developed by one of their competitors in the mobile phone space (who was also the client for this project). This was part of a large scale international evaluation for the client to determine how their new product would compare to the established iPhone.
What we did
This was a logistically difficult test to set up. There were two different mediums for the test: a fully functional iPhone and a Flash based prototype that required a touch screen monitor. The client wanted to be able to see both the participant’s facial expressions and where they were touching for both the iPhone and the prototype. Participants needed to use both the iPhone and the touchscreen interface in the same test session. And we wanted the client to be able to view all this comfortably in our viewing room instead of peering over the participant’s shoulder.
The evaluation was comprised of several different tasks which were common to both interfaces. The tasks were randomised and an evaluation scale was given after each task (two questions), each prototype (ten questions), and at the completion of the test (ten questions).
Results
While we are unable to discuss the outcome of the evaluation or provide screenshots of the prototype due to confidentiality agreements, we can say that logistically the experience went extremely smoothly for the test participants and clients both, especially with the touchscreen application portion of the evaluation.
